Description
Ethiopia: Coptic Ge'ez Handwritten Bible LeafCoptic handwritten very OldBible leaf.
It measures 17cm x 16 cm
This is an extremelyrare Coptic Bible leaf from the Ethiopian country.
This Bible leaf is writtenin Ethiopic (Ge'ez), a Semitic language that is no longer spoken, but is stillused for liturgical and other religious purposes by the Ethiopian OrthodoxChurch. This leave is vellum, usually calfskin, prepared by a lengthy exposurein lime, scraped with a rounded knife and finally rubbed smooth with pumicestone. The vellum is often scored with a pin, and they are written in black inkwith titles and holy names often being in red ink. The subjects of these Biblesare always Christian, but actual content varies. It is difficult to date thesepieces, which were made as early as the fourteenth century.
Note:
I have been traveling with an 2,000 sq. ft. museum for the last decade. The Museum is based on biblical ideas and encompasses a lot of different authentic time-period artifacts ranging from Early Bronze (3500 B.C.E.) all the way through modern times (Israel, Germany, China, America). There's ancient Roman artifacts, Byzantine, Coptic, Islamic/Ottoman, etc. I have over 60 ancient Bible Leaves, 3800 year old cuneiform, Papyrus, Torah Scrolls, etc that I will be listing over the next few months. If you're interested in acquiring the entire museum, send me a private message and we can talk further about what I have.
